To support arts education, the PTA sponsors the volunteer-run Art Docent program. Volunteer parents and community volunteers teach art lessons about a particular artist and/or elements of art, and guide the students in creating a work of art in that style. The goal of the program is to introduce students to basic elements of art and provide them with an opportunity to work with different artistic mediums such as tempera, watercolors, pastels, and collage.
Traditionally, the Art Docent Program at Columbia takes place over 4 months (February, March, April, May). Volunteer art docents teach one lesson each month. Training, lesson plans, and materials are provided. No prior art experience or background is necessary. All that is needed is a love of the arts and enthusiasm for working with kids!
How to Volunteer as an Art Docent
In the fall, teachers will send out a communication requesting volunteers. Volunteers will work with the teacher and Art Docent chair to schedule a time for the lessons. Most lessons should take about 1 hour with additional allowance of 30 min for setup (before) and 30-min for clean-up (after). Every classroom needs volunteers to teach and facilitate art lessons. We are also looking for individuals willing to help in other classrooms that might not have Art Docent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering to be an Art Docent, please email Tran Le at artdocent@mycolumbiapta.org
